On guard...Stand firm...Be strong

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love. [1 Corinthians 16:13-14]

I got back from that Shreveport conference a little before 10pm. Exhausted. Really, really tired. And, for the last 60 miles or so, I tried to think of just how I could get out of preparing my Sunday School lesson for tomorrow. I could turn it into a whole big group discussion. I could simply go to my class and say, "Look, I was travelling all weekend and didn't get it together." And they would love me and understand. But then, I thought....OK. 1 hour. I'll work 1 hour putting this together--and this is what the Lord Gave me. These last chapters of I Corinthians--the truth and essence of salvation. The belief in the saving power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And...this verse.

Lights...Vision...Obstacle Course!

You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall. [Psalm 18:28-29]

Most people don't think of the writer's life as being one of turbulence. Somewhere in the back of the collective subconscience lives that stereotypical vision of the writer toiling away in a cozy little garret, wearing a well-worn cardigan and drinking lots of tea. And, truthfully, that's where I was for a while--in spirit, anyway. Comfy couch, sweat pants, Diet Coke just quietly content. But then, things get rolling...book after book; project juggling; "deadline" feeling more and more literal. Just realizing that I couldn't do this--any of this--without my Lord shouldering so many burdens for me.

He keeps my lamp burning--giving me the energy I need to be a writer and a mother and a teacher and a.... He fuels me with His light and His love and His grace.

The Ultimate Wish List

~~Colossians 1:9-14

I'm reading through the book of Colossians this month as a study I'm doing with a dear friend--a college student (formerly my HS student) who's has the most searching spirit. I'd like to say I knew exactly what we'd get from our study of this book, but I didn't. I basically skimmed for a 4-chapter book that could be handled easily in a short month. But God is amazingly wonderful, and He knew exactly what we needed to hear--yes, "we." I may be the mentor in this relationship, but God's word is perfect, perfect for every moment in your life.

So, I was struck, blown away by these verses. Paul tells the people that his prayer is that they:

Grace and Peace be with you

(from Colossians 1:2)~~Grace and peace be with you from God our Father

A friend and I are reading through the book of Colossians during the month of February. It's a lovely, power-packed short book, ideal for a month's study. Right away I'm struck by his greeting: Grace and peace be with you from God our Father. I have a note in my margin defining "grace" in the context of this verse...undeserved daily experience of God's favor. Whoa. I don't see this as a matter of Paul wishing this for the people, but as a reminder that this is what they have.

With Friends Like These...

Continuing my personal study of Daniel...

In Chapter 2, Daniel is faced with the threat of execution if he doesn't accomplish a seemingly impossible task: telling and interpreting the dream of the king. How could one man possibly know another man's dream? All the other wise men of Babylon say that is a feat that could only be accomplished by a god. Of course, Daniel has an awesome God who works through him. And when faced with the task, he goes to his friends where he "urged them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery."
