- Three Journeys --Part Three

My season of travels and appearances ended with a simple little booksigning at LifeWay--just down the highway. Booksignings can be delightful or disastrous, and this one fell way short of delightful. The set-up was wonderful enough, but about one hour in, the sky turned black and the rain poured down. Then the rain blew sideways. Not the ideal weather for anybody to be out anywhere. Thus, the weather conditions when it was time for me to give up my little table and go home.
Now, the drive back to my house from this store consists of a couple of tricky exits and onramps, and I was driving within a solid sheet of rain. Still, I was pretty sure I was on the right path, but at some point the storm abated (or I drove out of it...) and I realized I was on the wrong road, going the wrong way--on I-10 heading East when I should have been on Loop 1604. I knew at somepoint these two intersected, but because I was in totally unfamiliar territory, I didn't know if I'd missed the intersection.

This has been a season of journeys for me, and shortly after my trip to Tulsa, I had an opportunity to go back "home" to New Mexico and speak with the Chick-Lit group there. This, combined with a pampering visit at mom and daddy's to finish my next novel, made for a nice wrap-up to the traveling season.
Now, because I am such a procrastinator, I did not purchase my airline tickets on time, and refused to pay $400 for a round-trip flight in and out of El Paso. Besides, by the time I factor in airport waiting time, plus the drive from EP to LC, the difference is a mere matter of hours. So, mini-van packed up, audio book ready to go, I hit the open road.

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to speak with an ACFW group in Tulsa. Lovely group, lovely time, and lovely short flight. I mean, yes, there was the inevitable plane change in Dallas, but other than that, just a couple of hours--four total--and bam! Several hundred miles travelled. So, on Saturday, after my meeting was done, I arrived at the airport my customary one hour early, plugged in the laptop, wrote and wrote and wrote...and wrote...and wrote--because storms in Dallas made flying dangerous. Well, technically, flying was OK, it was the landing that seemed iffy. Once we got clearance, though, it was off to Dallas, then a quick plane change, then on another plane to sit on the tarmac and wait. And wait. And wait--until it was deemed "safe" to take off.
Now, this is where I need to have faith in the pilots, because I don't think their idea of "safe" is exactly the same as mine. Once we had clearance, it was up, and up, and up--THROUGH the storm. At least, I hope it was up. Every now and then I swear I thought we dropped down a bit. I've never been afraid of flying. Never even felt nervous before. But in the midst of that rain, lightning, thunder...I dunno. Something about watching the storm blow rain sideways across a plane's wing, well...let's just say there was one prayerful woman on that flight!
